HALIBUT: INTERESTING INFORMATION AND FACTS

AGE AND SIZE:  Females grow faster than males. The oldest female recorded was 55 years. The oldest male recorded was 42 years.

Few males will reach 80 pounds and nearly all "BUTTS" over 100 pounds are female.

A 50 pound female will produce 500 000 eggs!
A 250 pound female will produce 4 000 000 eggs!!!

So next time you pull that great big monster up from the bottom, take a picture, or try to measure its length.(Fat chance it will be in the boat! ??MAYBE??.)

The biggest halibut documented weighed in at 500 pounds, but they say that some have been caught up to 700 pounds!!

You can tell a Halibut's age by the otolith, which is the ear of the Halibut(that's what I've been told). It is a white flat oval bone, which is situated 3 to 4 inches behind the eyes, in its brain. If you want to remove it, use a hacksaw, NOT A KNIFE. (I have the scars to prove it.) The otolith has rings on it, just like a tree. All you have to do is count the rings, and you have the age of your "Barndoor".

FOOD:  Halibut are strong swimmers, and will eat anything they catch, such as cod, sandlance, herring, and salmon. Octopus and crab seem to be their favorite.

This information has come from the International Halibut Commission, and a book titled "How to Catch Trophy Halibut" by Christopher Batin and Terry Rudnick.
